How do I prevent thunderstorm anxiety in my new puppy?

We had a dog years ago when I was little that freaked out during storms. Admittedly, some got close enough to set off our car alarms in the driveway and shake the house, but he would freak even when he could barley hear the storms. I'm bringing a new puppy home as soon as she's old enough and I want to stop any possible problems before they start. I'm also worried about the breed (toy poodle) as being notorious for barking and being timid. I want to spare what our old dog went through if possible.
