I'm planning a 3 day backpacking trip in october and this will be my first time. ?

There is a fair chance it could be snowy and below freezing. I hear that wearing levis is a bad choice so i was thinking about going to the local goodwill store and picking up some 70's polyester pants to wear instead. Is that a good idea? Any other ideas on what to wear on my trip?
